Eng. Nickson Bukachi Ongeri joins AFREC as a Senior Policy Officer in charge of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. He will be supporting AFREC’s transformational programmes and initiatives across the African Union Member States on renewable energy, bioenergy modernization, energy efficiency, energy transition and clean cooking.
He joins AFREC from Kenya’s energy regulator, Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority where he served as a Senior Renewable Energy Officer. During his ten (10) years tenure at the regulator, he was instrumental in developing and implementing policies, strategies and regulatory frameworks on renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy access and energy transition. Notably, Eng. Bukachi spearheaded the roll out of the Standards and Labelling programme in Kenya, development, and implementation of the mini-grid regulatory framework, net metering regulations, Feed in Tariffs, green hydrogen guidelines, biofuels guidelines, energy auditing among others. He is a trainer and Adjunct Faculty on renewable energy and energy efficiency with Multimedia University and Strathmore University and has contributed to several sector wide energy studies in the Eastern Africa Region.
Eng. Bukachi holds a Master of Science in Energy Technology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Moi University. In addition, he is a professional engineer by the Engineers Board of Kenya, a Certified Energy Manager, Certified Measurement and Verification Professional, Certified Renewable Energy Professional among others.
