AfREC Participates in High Level Clean Cooking Event

The Governments of Kenya, Norway, and the United States, together with the African Union (AU), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the International Energy Agency (IEA), convened a high level virtual event to review progress since the landmark 2024 Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa. The meeting brought together global leaders to assess implementation of commitments, announce new pledges, and outline the next phase of international action to expand access to clean cooking across the continent.
The event was co chaired by President William Ruto of Kenya, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, AU Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah, and IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. Discussions highlighted progress on the USD 2.2 billion in commitments announced in 2024, alongside growing policy ambition from African governments to accelerate clean cooking access.
The African Energy Commission (AfREC) participated in this important convening, underscoring its alignment with continental priorities and its ongoing commitment to advancing clean cooking as part of the AU’s energy agenda. AfREC’s engagement reflects its role in supporting policy frameworks, strengthening data systems, and promoting sustainable financing to close Africa’s clean cooking gap.
Looking ahead, participants agreed to leverage upcoming milestones, including the United Nations General Assembly, to mobilize further investment and partnerships. AfREC’s participation reinforces its dedication to the African Union’s Clean Cooking Programme, ensuring clean cooking remains central to achieving Agenda 2063 and SDG 7.
