AFREC Successfully Launched Expanded Support Program for Establishing and/or Improving National and Regional Energy Information Systems.

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) successfully launched the second phase of the Support Program for establishing/improving National and Regional Energy Information Systems (NEIS/REIS) during a consultative meeting held in Dakar, Senegal, on November 18, 2024. The event brought together representatives from African Union Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs).

Building on the program's first phase, which supported 10 Member States in 2022, this 2nd phase extends support to an additional 15 AU Member States—Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Djibouti, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Togo, Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Mozambique—and three RECs: East African Community (EAC), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), and Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The opening session was honored by the presence of Madam Oumy Khairy Diop, Permanent Secretary for Energy at the Ministry of Energy, Oil and Mines of Senegal, who reaffirmed the importance of reliable energy data in achieving sustainable energy access and fostering economic growth. She further thanked AFREC for its role in organizing the event and bringing together stakeholders to address Africa's energy data challenges collaboratively.

AFREC’s Executive Director Mr. Rashid Ali Abdallah, represented by Mr. Abdoulaye OUEDDO, Senior Policy Officer, Energy Information Systems highlighted how the success of the 2022-2023 program demonstrated the transformative impact of strong energy information systems and reaffirmed AFREC's commitment to supporting Member States and Regional Economic Communities in establishing robust and reliable energy information systems as a foundation for achieving Africa's integrated, resilient, and sustainable energy future.

In this second phase, AFREC aims to strengthen the capacity of participating countries and RECs to establish, sustain robust national and regional energy data systems and fostering regional collaboration. These systems are essential for accurate energy planning and informed policy decisions. The initiative is building on lessons learnt and achievements from the earlier phase, which included producing diagnostic reports and five-year action plans for the initial 10 Member States.

The program focuses on Improving data collection and management practices to address gaps in energy information, presenting standardized methodologies tailored to national and regional energy information needs and identifying and fulfilling the technical, financial, and human resource requirements necessary to support energy data systems.

With this expanded initiative, AFREC continues its commitment to equipping African countries with the tools needed for effective energy planning, ensuring alignment with the continent’s development goals and priorities. The event, marks a significant milestone in AFREC’s commitment to enhancing energy data management, fostering sustainable energy development, and improving the national and regional energy information systems.

This program is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
